2012: The Marijuana Movement. What Will 2013 Bring?

In basic terms the New Year is simply just a calendar change; a change in the numbers of the year that we use to associate with the present time; more or less a new set of those 12 months that we refer to as a 'year'. However, many use it as a chance to reflect back on the year that has passed in an effort to measure some form of forward development or progress, whether in our personal lives, business, or even the progression of a nation as a whole. A chance to reflect back on what has been accomplished while using those achievements to set the bar higher and to fuel the goals for the upcoming year.
This same approach, or measurement of success rather, can be applied to the marijuana movement of the past year, or what we know as 2012. Marijuana in general spent a majority of 2012 in a defensive position, much like it has since 1937 when the Marijuana Tax Act was passed. However, marijuana activists will measure 2012's success with regards to one day, November 6, 2012. On this day marijuana activists came out and legalized marijuana for recreational use in Colorado and Washington state. Many others around the United States also helped to pass decriminalization and medical marijuana laws. Although individual state laws differ from Federal Law we can see that there is a national consensus toward marijuana legalization.
December 22nd came around like any other day, even after a fictitious and fabricated idea that the world would end on December 21st in connection to a Mayan Calendar of some sort. But that leaves me to wonder, how does a fabricated story like "the end of the world" become so viral, and so believable? Yet something so real, with a true backing and support system of people who believe in it and have proof of it's benefits are disregarded by so many prohibitionists? Well it seems that those prohibitionists are becoming outnumbered as we move forward into 2013! Let's keep the movement moving. Happy New Year and as always, STAY MEDICATED!

Wake & Bake Wednesday

The Game - Celebration

This song was released by The Game as his first single from his fifth album, Jesus Piece, which dropped a couple of weeks ago on December 11th. This song has been out since this past summer, but the fact that it samples the famed "1st of tha Month" by Bone Thugs-N-Harmony makes it a really catchy song to bump, especially while smoking your favorite strains! So roll up, spark up, click play, and enjoy!

Do Cannabis Coffee Shops Have a Future in the U.S.?

Are Pot-Friendly Coffee Shops About to Become a Thing in America by Alexander Abad-Santos

With recreational marijuana now legalized in Colorado and Washington we will slowly but surely see the industry attempt to grow with the two "rebel" states glancing over their shoulders every so often to see how the federal government will respond. It's almost as if these two states have to take an inch a day until their toes eventually get stepped on by the big boot of the federal government.....

However, maybe that day will never come. Maybe Colorado and Washington state will put together and enforce a detailed set of laws that will make recreational marijuana use a reality nationwide. These two states have a lot of work to do in the coming months to prove that these law changes can be applied and carried out smoothly in society. But let's be honest, as we all know smoking marijuana isn't anything knew. It's not just a fad. It's been around, people have smoked it and will continue smoking it regardless of any restrictions. People have always accepted marijuana use amongst themselves, but fear of the implications of using it has kept us in the "cannabis closet". So why not make a legal change to something that a majority of society now openly accepts? It almost seems counterproductive to go against the voice of the people anyways.
So how far will these states be able to take recreational marijuana in terms of a legal industry? That is a question that nobody has a clear cut answer to right now. However, if Colorado and Washington can reap positive benefits from doing so then maybe there is a future for the open acceptance of cannabis in America, even from those who don't indulge. Will I ever enter an Amsterdam-like coffee shop in the United States to have a smoke and a coffee to kick off my day? Probably not any time soon, but with the way things are going, hey you never know?!

Marijuana Not a HIGH Priority for Obama

So Obama has finally addressed (very briefly and only to a certain extent) the legalization of marijuana in Colorado and Washington state. Simply put he states that going after recreational users in these states is not a top priority of federal law enforcement officials. Well that just seems obvious. I mean that is what we the people are looking to accomplish in the first place with the recent laws that have been passed in these two states. To go after users of marijuana, whether they are partaking for medical or recreational purposes, would just be absurd. Weed is here to stay and people will continue to indulge regardless of laws and restrictions. The issue isn't if the federal government should go after the users or not, but rather if they will reconsider the laws that restrict these people of their liberties.
So Obama seems to be beating around the bush a bit here and rightfully so as this will not be an overnight change. It isn't as simple as him addressing the nation with one of his powerful speeches that ends with him sparking a joint and saying, "Marijuana is now legalized in the United States of America!" (*as everyone erupts into cheers and sparks up*). Although that would be cool as shit, let's be realistic. He will most likely sit back and see if Colorado and Washington can successfully manage these new laws and make them work without any negative implications to society. He also goes on to say that he does not support widespread legalization of marijuana "at this point". So there seems to be some positive comments here from the president that may indicate that he would consider addressing the laws of prohibition and listening to what the majority wants. Regardless we will stay medicated!

Cans of Marijuana Shot Over U.S. Border from Cannon?

Cans of marijuana just falling from the heavens bruh this can't be real life. After I finish up this blog I'm heading out in hopes of catching one of these cans. See me in the desert running at Usain Bolt type speed just to catch a can of OG Kush. Supposedly the 30 plus marijuana cans had a total of 85 pounds of weed with a street value of about $43,000. Not a bad find if you came across that on your daily walk through the desert.

Marijuana Officially Legal in Colorado

Marijuana Officially Legal in Colorado with Stroke of Governor's Pen by Ashley Killough

Today the recreational use of marijuana officially became legal in Colorado. It has been a little over a month since voters passed Amendment 64 in favor of the measure. Although it will take some time for regulations and measures to be written and enforced it is another step in the right direction for marijuana activists. The people have spoken and the states are following through with the implementation of these measures. The federal government has yet to respond and it will be interesting to see how and if they do. Obama could continue to enforce the federal law and put a halt to the legalization movement, but then he would be going against the voice of the people who secured him another four years in The Oval Office. How will he and the federal government react? In my opinion, Colorado and Washington should be treated as experiment states for implementing marijuana legalization. If we can make it work and it benefits the states and nation as a whole then why not? I don't see legalization doing any more harm than prohibition does currently. Regardless, stay tuned and stay medicated!

Marijuana Legalized in Washington State Today!

Today Washington state made history as the first in the nation to legalize marijuana for recreational use by adults. No time was wasted as dozens of supporters gathered under Seattle's Space Needle just around midnight last night to kick off the legalization of marijuana in Washington state, and quite possibly the beginning of the end of marijuana prohibition nationwide. There is a provision in place that forbids users to smoke outside the privacy of their homes in Washington state but that didn't stop this crowd from enjoying a nice smoke session with some reggae music. I mean after all these are the people who have come together in an effort to change the law for the better of society as a whole. It would just be inhumane to attempt to stop a positive and joyful celebration from occurring in public. No police force was present at the Space Needle last night and another gathering is set to occur this evening! Stay medicated Washington!

Life with Marijuana Legalized

Don't legalize weed? Ok so this hilarious video makes some sarcastic yet some oddly true points in regards to what marijuana legalization would be like. Would prices of marijuana rise with legalization? Maybe, but they could also potentially drop. Regardless a little bump in price would probably make it all the worthwhile to be able to enjoy it wherever you please without having to hide in the "cannabis closet" or constantly looking over your shoulder. Would legalization lead to a lesser quality of weed in terms of potency, taste, smell, etc.? Possibly. Mass produced weed that isn't as potent might be more available but there will ALWAYS be great bud out there. These businesses will want to give their customers/patients the best quality weed for their recreational or medicinal use. They will not sacrifice quality otherwise who will purchase from them? With legalization there will be all types of quality bud available, from dirt to the most potent strains of kush, it is just a matter of what the customer can afford and what they prefer. So no, there won't just suddenly be one general strain of weed available to everyone. The biggest truth in this video is that smoking with your parents or the newbie might be a little odd but hey I'm sure it would lead to some funny stories and good times! Legal or not, stay medicated!

Wake & Bake Wednesday

Kid Cudi - Just What I Am

So for Wake & Bake Wednesday we decided to roll with another Kid Cudi song because he is just killing it right now and I'm anticipating a great album when Cudi drops Indicud in early 2013. Kid Cudi released this track from his new album in August 2012. He released the music video for the single about a week ago on November 6th and I can tell you I have been hitting the repeat button ever since. King Chip, a long time friend and collaborator of Kid Cudi, is also on the track and I think he does a great job complementing Cudi's flow. Cudi, who directed the video himself, gave it an interesting psychedelic/trippy affect with a modern party scene vibe. So grind up some dank sativa this morning and enjoy this masterpiece from Cudi. Stay Medicated!

Colorado and Washington LEGALIZE Marijuana!

So last night Barack Obama was re-elected for a second term. Important for us marijuana activists because we all know Romney wasn't going to do the industry any good. More importantly was the legalization of marijuana for recreational use in Colorado and Washington! This will definitely get the discussion going in regards to possibly ending marijuana prohibition for good. Washington and Colorado could potentially provide the blueprint on how to properly run a legal marijuana industry. If all goes well other states may follow suit and full legalization could be in the near future. Either way this is a big step in the right direction and an overall win for the good guys! Congratulations Colorado and Washington I will be visiting real soon. Stay recreationally medicated!

Ben Harper - Burn One Down

We figured this would be a very fitting song for the morning after the election in which two states, Washington and Colorado, legalized marijuana for RECREATIONAL use. Not decriminalized. Not medical marijuana. Recreational use for adults. Legalized. These marijuana initiative outcomes were just as interesting than the Presidential election itself. All in all a big step towards full legalization and a big blow to marijuana prohibition. So roll up, spark up and enjoy! Stay medicated!

Successful Smokers of the Day

BARACK OBAMA & BILL CLINTON

With the 2012 Election tomorrow and the potential for major changes in regards to marijuana laws, we thought it was only fitting to have a dual 'Successful Smoker' of the day for Obama and Clinton. Look at Clinton's face in the video when he claims he "didn't inhale". LMFAO what a blatant lie! At least Obama had the courage to share that he did inhale saying, "That was the point." Not only did Obama inhale, he even had started a few pot-smoking trends within his group of friends who were referred to as "the Choom Gang" aka the marijuana smokers. The first Obama inspired pot-smoking trend was referred to as "TA" or "total absorption" in which if you exhaled prematurely (as Clinton claims) you were assessed a penalty and you were skipped the next time the joint came around the circle. The Choom Gang was against wasting good bud. Obama also came up with "Roof Hits" in which the "Choom Gang" members would tilt their heads back in a fish-bowled car and inhale the leftover smoke from the roof of the vehicle. Lastly, Obama was also know for his "interceptions" in which he would break into the circle out of order and snatch up a few extra hits. Interesting enough, most of the members of the "Choom Gang" were good athletes and students who actually went on to be successful and productive lawyers, writers, businessmen and oh ya Presidents of the U.S. So will Obama and Clinton be sparking up after tomorrow's Election results come in? I don't doubt it, and you can bet Clinton will be practicing "total absorption" otherwise Obama will smoke that shit straight to the head! Stay medicated!

Why is Marijuana Still Illegal in 2012?

With the 2012 Election just around the corner and the possibility of legalizing marijuana for recreational and medicinal use in a variety of states across the U.S. I couldn't help but to throw "The Union - the business behind getting high" into my DVD player. Ya I know the movie was released in 2007, but it expresses a lot of interesting points, most of which have you asking yourself, "why is marijuana still illegal?" Although that could all change on Tuesday November 6th, I thought it would be fitting to re-iterate some of the points made in the movie that a lot of people disregard or even overlook. If you haven't seen this documentary I suggest grabbing a copy HERE for under $10 before reading the summary below.
  • Gateway Drug Theory - As we all know marijuana has been considered a "gateway drug" because as "they" say if we use marijuana we are more likely to use more dangerous hard drugs. However, marijuana prohibition actually makes marijuana into a gateway drug. Marijuana prohibition leaves marijuana in the hands of drug dealers who don't regulate or discriminate against age and end up pushing harder drugs on the buyers. By regulating it we ultimately get rid of the interactions between marijuana buyers and drug dealers.
  • Addictive vs. habitual - Marijuana isn't addictive, it's more habitual. Yes, we may desire it like we desire a coffee, or a beer, or a favorite dish of food, but it is not addictive.
  • Privatized prisons - they exist so investors can profit from them. In order for that to happen the prisoners have to keep rolling on in. Therefore people are put in jail for long sentences for less serious crimes involving marijuana.
  • Drug Testing - There are millions of drug tests every year, hence millions of dollars to be made doing it. Whether it's for professionals looking to secure a job, athletes or even extra curricular activities drug tests are being done for everything these days. Next you'll need to take a fuckin drug test to get your medications...smh. With this drug testing, we are basically telling our children that if you don't want to get caught use the hard drugs not the soft drugs like marijuana that will show up on a test 28 days later.
  • Pharmaceutical Industry - this industry is the most profitable in the U.S. but why do the pharmaceutical companies feel threatened by a plant? The answer...because MARIJUANA IS NATURAL! It has many benefits and since it is natural it is basically free medication that you can grow yourself. Since it is natural it can't be patented like pill form medications. So ultimately there is no money to be made for pharmaceutical companies, and the legalization of it could actually hurt their profits. This is the reason why there has been the creation of Marinol, which is a FDA approved pill form of synthetic cannabinoid. This shows that the components within the cannabis plant do have medicinal value, but pharmaceuticals want it in a pill form so it can be patented and profited from.
  • Medical Marijuana v. Recreational Use - Although the discussion about medical marijuana has been more openly accepted by many people today, some are still against it, but why? They say that medical marijuana is just a platform or stepping stone to full legalization. SO WHAT! If it comes up in the discussion then there must be some positive benefits to the idea otherwise people wouldn't be talking about it.
  • MARIJUANA v. ALCOHOL - Alcohol prohibition didn't work in the past, and by regulating it there were less issues in regards to crime and violence. Ask yourself this: Why do people desire alcohol? For relaxation, pleasure, taste, social reasons. Now ask yourself this: Why do people desire marijuana? For all the exact same reasons....AND for medicinal purposes! With that being said if we can legalize and regulate alcohol, then why not marijuana? Marijuana has some positive benefits to its use whereas alcohol has absolutely none and the use of it is more dangerous to yourself and others. Yet smoking a joint is frowned upon by some of our peers who enjoy their daily alcoholic beverage. Doesn't make much sense now does it?
  • Natural - Why is nature against the law in 2012

After reading this did you ask yourself, "Why is marijuana still illegal in 2012?" If so then get out there on November 6th and be a part of history by changing the laws in your respective states. Then one day it will be a federal discussion. Stay medicated!

Is Marijuana Prohibition on the Brink?

Will November 6th prove to be the beginning of the end of marijuana prohibition? Only time will tell as three states, Colorado, Oregon and Washington look to legalize marijuana for recreational use (YES, FULL LEGALIZATION - sold, taxed and regulated like your ol' pack of beer). Arkansas and Massachusetts add a couple of jabs to the mix as well as they both vote on the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes within their respective states. Five potential votes that could swing in the favor of marijuana activists across the United States. Arkansas could be the first southern state to pass a medical marijuana law and I wouldn't be surprised if Massachusetts passed as well with the overall acceptance of medical marijuana in New England in the recent years. On the bigger scale, Washington is looking strong for winning full legalization within the state whereas Colorado and Oregon aren't looking too promising. However, a 3/5 swing would be a big upset for marijuana activists nationwide and would definitely spark a Federal discussion over the legalization of marijuana and the benefits it can provide to our nation and the world. So if you live in one of these 5 states pack a bowl, roll a blunt, or twist up a joint and walk down to your nearest voting center and help pass the shit out of these laws on Tuesday...why wait? Who knows what tomorrow will bring...Stay Medicated!

Amsterdam Coffee Shops to Remain Open

CHECK OUT OUR NEW AND IMPROVED WEBSITE

We all know what Amsterdam is all about...an interesting history, the red light district and legal coffee shops where you can purchase marijuana legally, as a resident and a tourist. However, the Dutch government is attempting to introduce legislation that would limit the sale of cannabis only to Dutch residents who registered with their local coffee shop for a "weed pass". Therefore it would be illegal for tourists to be allowed in these coffee shops. The question is would you still visit Amsterdam if you weren't allowed to enter a coffee shop? I probably would because I have been to Amsterdam and it is a beautiful city with a lot to offer. However, I will say that staying at the Bulldog Hotel/Coffee shop and rolling up and smoking inside the lobby of your hotel before you start your day was an interesting experience. The freedom of entering one of the 220 coffee shops across the city and purchasing marijuana and space cakes at my own discretion, legally, was definitely a trip. Luckily for all of you who hope to one day visit or go back to Amsterdam, the mayor has made the decision to keep the coffee shops open next year in spite of the new Dutch law which was intended to reduce drug tourism. The city has about 7 million tourists every year, 1.5 million of which enter a coffee shop during their visit. The mayor believes that the 1.5 million tourists that could essentially become banned from these shops will just resort to street dealers to get their marijuana, thus leading to more crime, violence, and no quality control of the drugs on the market. Hmmm...sounds like a country I know. Hey, maybe after November 6th Washington will become America's Amsterdam? I say why not...

Trick, Treat or Weed-Infused Candy?

Credits to Maxim.com for the Photo Above

Public safety officials always announce a warning of some sort every year for parents and trick-or-treaters on Halloween. One warning that we don't need to be reminded of though is the inspection of children's candy to make sure it is safe, edible and unopened. But who thought we would have to keep our eye's peeled for marijuana-laced candy? First off let's keep this type of candy out of the hands of children. When issues like these come up about people doing stupid shit such as handing out weed-infused candy to children it doesn't bode well for the marijuana activists who are trying to bring a positive outlook to the industry. As we all know the media and marijuana prohibitionists are quick to jump on any negative aspect of marijuana legalization and blow it completely out of proportion. So let's stick to the regular treats this year for the kids' sake. However, if you see me coming up to your door in a bong costume please feel free to hand over a "3 Rastateers" bar and a "Rasta Reese's"!

Successful Smoker of the Day

Credits to Marcus Sakoda's Blog for the artwork above.

TIM LINCECUM
Well Tim Lincecum and the San Francisco Giants captured their second World Series title in three years on Sunday so it seems only fitting that we honor Tim the Toker as our 'successful smoker'. As most know in 2009 Tim was pulled over and cited for a misdemeanor marijuana possession in his home state of Washington. Interesting, because on November 6th Washington could actually become the first state to legalize marijuana for recreational use. Adults 21 and over in the state would be allowed to buy taxed, inspected marijuana at state-licensed shops. That would be a big step toward ending marijuana prohibition and we all know how Tim will be voting on this question. However, I'm sure the former Cy Young award winner will be too busy celebrating his second World Series title somewhere in San Francisco blowing "smoke in the air"! I mean look at the guy, I swear he came out the womb with that cut just fiending to smoke a joint. Let Tim smoke! Stay Medicated Tim!
